An evening with Rosie Batty

An evening with Rosie Batty, a domestic violence campaigner, hosted by Jarvis Subaru and organised by Joanna Collins from A Touch of Beauty.

In domestic violence situations women and families will often not leave their home for fear their beloved pet might be harmed*.

On Monday 7 November, the RSPCA, Joanna Collins and Jarvis Subaru will host a cocktail party with Australian of the Year and domestic violence campaigner, Rosie Batty, to raise funds for the RSPCA South Australia’s Safe Kennel Program.

Domestic violence is traditionally understood as an abuse of power between partners, however, this recently has been extended to include other family members and pets. A study undertaken by the Australian Veterinary Journal in 2012, reported that many Australian women were unaware of animal accommodation services.

The Safe Kennel Program, offered by RSPCA South Australia, provides emergency accommodation and a safe haven for pets for up to 100 days while women and families can get themselves to safety.

Rosie, a survivor of domestic violence and animal lover, will share her experiences of working with women and families who stayed in unsafe situations because of their strong bond with their pet. Other survivors will discuss their experiences and the new life they have forged for themselves, their children and pets.
