Spring Clean

As far as your skin regime goes, it could easily be said that a cleanser can play second best to all the arguably more exciting serums and moisturisers. But we wanted to take this opportunity to sing its virtues, as it really is one of the most important steps in taking care of your skin - the cleanser is the unsung hero!

Without a good cleansing plan, those serums and moisturisers will be fighting a battle to actually reach your dermis, going up against oil, dirt and pollution residue, making them far less effective and wasting your hard-earned dollars. Not to mention that, but if you’re not properly cleansing your skin, you’re greatly increasing the chance of blocked pores, leading to those pesky zits we’d all rather avoid.

You can use the mission statement of ‘Out with the old, in with the new’ when it comes to a cleanse.

We’re big fans of the double cleanse. The first to get rid of the day’s additions to the face (makeup, oil production, grime) and the second to really go deep into the pores and flush out anything remaining and get rid of those underlying dead skin cells.

We’re also a fan of using a cleanser and then rinsing with water. We’ve all succumbed to the 2-minute wet wipe cleanse of a night out when you simply cannot wait a second longer to lay your head to pillow, but don’t let it be a habit. Using a cleanser with active ingredients kickstarts your skincare in a way that just can’t be compared to running a wet tissue over your face, and we don’t even want to start on how egressing rubbing at makeup can lead to skin tearing and premature wrinkles.

Not least of all, we recommend using an active toning solution on a gentle cotton pad to ensure everything is gone from your fabulous face. It always amazes us just how much there is left to remove when it comes to this step - it appears our skin may love to hoard when it comes to things we don’t need!

Here are a few of our favourites when it comes to cleansing.

Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse

You know how we talked about the double cleanse? Well try this Pre-Cleanse on for size. As it happens, oil attracts oil when it comes to cleansing and a beautiful mix of kukui, olive, apricot kernel, borage and rice bran oils in this one will nix all that grime at the same time as delivering skin nutrients and hydration and then wash off entirely (read: no residue) ready for its next, thorough cleanse. This is an addition to your skin care routine, that once incorporated, you’ll never do without again. It gives a level of clean you will normally only see in a professional treatment.

Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser

This one is full of lactic acid, an active ingredient that goes to work breaking down the daily excesses we talked about before but also in loosening those dead skin cells, readying them to be washed away. The lactic acid means the cleanser is taking care of texture and the smooth appearance of the skin, while Vitamin E softens and rose flower oil calms.

Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner

You can spray this over the face, but as we mentioned, we love to spritz it onto a cotton pad and very gently pass it over the skin, post-cleanse, just to put the cleansing icing on the cake, so to speak. Lavender, balm mint and aloe vera calm and soothe the skin and prep it to allow optimum absorption of your next stage of skincare.

Sodashi Clay Cleanser with Sandalwood

Behold the smell that delicious sandalwood brings to this one - it gives an almost ceremonial feel to your cleanse. But this one is beautifully gentle, and filled with activated white clay to draw out impurities from your skin. Then a blend of jojoba, macadamia, apricot kernel and almond oils make sure hydration levels stay at an all-time high.
