SUN SCIENCE

It’s no secret that here at A Touch Of Beauty, we are huge fans of the Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics range. It gives a gorgeous fresh finish, blending right into the face seamlessly rather than appearing as a cover-up. We see it as an enhancement to the gorgeous skin beneath it that we are dedicated to creating – the icing on the cake. Mostly, we are crazy about the fact that mineral makeup is actually good for your skin, feeding it as it polishes your look.

But there’s one other, major, reason we are unwavering in our love of mineral makeup and it’s one that we find most first-time users (and even some regular users) of mineral makeup are unaware of. Mineral makeup is, in and of itself, a physical blocker of sun, meaning it naturally shields you from the number one ageing source.

Yes, what we’re saying is this: wearing mineral makeup will help prevent you ageing.

Let’s face it, those of us who are serious about our skincare would never dare head out of the house without sunscreen, even now that summer is on its way out. We all know that Autumn, Spring and even Winter in Australia can be damaging to our face given the amount of sun we are exposed to. But it’s important to know the difference between what screens you’re applying to your face and how they work.

There are two kinds of sunscreen: chemical and physical. Chemical is as it sounds, made with chemical content to ‘absorb’ UVA and UVB rays, after which it converts them into some other type of energy. Be aware that some chemical blockers can contain harmful artificial ingredients so keep an eye on yours, and know that it will lose its efficacy after a certain amount of absorption and can only partly protect from UVA rays and infrared, the two villains that are increasingly under the microscope for ageing damage.

A physical blocker (i.e. mineral makeup), on the other hand, is one that contains the naturally occurring titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that actually physically ‘block’ or hold up a shield against UV rays, acting like tiny mirrors and reflecting and refracting them away from your skin. Research done recently shows that these micronized powders provide a very broad spectrum sun protection from UVA radiation.

To know that your mineral makeup does provide sun protection, you must look at the listing on your product though. Jane Iredale products list all their SPFs. We recommend finding a physical blocker moisturiser of SPF50+ (take a look at Dermalogica Solar Defence Booster or Pure Light SPF50+) and then layering your Jane Iredale products on top.

Believe us when we say, this is the best investment you can make into keeping your skin looking good and slap on that sunscreen!
